Informational interviews are a great network approach and allow you to gather information about a particular company or position and expand your network at the same time. Here are example questions you can use to give you some ideas, or to supplement the questions you already have.

Asking for Advice:

  • How did you manage to overcome xxx when you went through the xxx?
  • What training or education is required for this type of work?
  • What personal qualities or abilities are important to being successful in this position?
  • How did you get your job?
  • What position do people tend to move onto from this one?
  • What entry level positions are best for learning the basics of this position/
  • What advice would you give someone entering this field?
  • What types of additional training is available for people in this field?
  • What are the best prerequisites for jobs in this field?
  • Which professional publications or organizations would help me learn more about this field?
  • What do you think of my experiences in terms of entering this field/
  • What do you see as the problems of working in this field?

Asking for Information:

  • What do you like most/least about your role?
  • If you could improve one process or department, what would it be and why?
  • How effective have you been in the past with…?
  • Who do you believe are the best companies/people that do this job/function?
  • What does a typical day in this position entail?
  • What part of this job do you find the most challenging/satisfying?
  • What opportunities for advancement are there in this position?
  • What are the salary ranges for various levels in this field?
  • How do you see jobs in this field changing in the future?
  • Is there a demand for people in this occupation?

Asking for Referrals:

  • I’m looking to expand my network of contacts in this field who do you think I should contact next.
  • Who else do you think I should speak with?
  • Do you know of 3 other people (with this expertise) I can speak to?
  • Can I use your name?
  • Do you know of someone who may be experiencing the similar challenges
  • Do you know of others who are struggling with the same issues?
